Spring Landscape Maintenance
Spring is here, and it's time to start thinking about our landscapes. Questions like, how and when
do I cut back my perennials, should I fertilize my trees and shrubs and, when should I schedule my
mulching? The answers are, down to the ground before new growth emerges, yes and now. Preparing
your landscape in the spring sets the tone for the year. As long as your beds are relatively clean, weed
pre-emergent should be applied in late February or early March before temperatures rise and weed
seed germination begins. If excessive leaves and debris are present in beds, a Spring clean-up should
be done before pre-emergent is applied. Bed edging and mulching can be done anytime. One problem
I have been seeing on properties is mulch being too deep around the base of trees and shrubs. Mulch
depth should be no more than three inches, if mulch exceeds this depth, then it may be necessary
to remove mulch and then re-apply a fresh top-dressing. Pruning of non-fl owering trees and shrubs
can be done in the Spring if needed, there will be information on pruning in the summer addition
of BAM HAPPENINGS. If you are interested in, or have any questions about our Spring services,
please give us a call, we would be happy to speak with you.
